Events and Activities

A day of Chinese-inspired events, performances, games, food around Stowell Street and Chinatown from 11am – 4pm

1. Chinese Arch, Stowell Street

Speeches from key representatives of the Chinese community and Newcastle City Council at approx 12pm.

The popular traditional dragon and lion dances will once again animate the area around the ceremonial Chinese arch on Stowell Street. These will take place from approximately 12:30pm.

2. North East Chinese Association, Stowell Street

The North East Chinese Association presents an exhibition of Chinese costume, food, arts and crafts between 12pm – 4pm.

3. Chinese Market & Fairground, Bath Lane

Come along and enjoy the funfair and stalls featuring traditional arts and crafts and Chinese food between 11am – 4pm.

4. Children’s Marquee, Thornton Square

There will be traditional Chinese arts and crafts and fun for all the family between 11am – 4pm.

Chinese New Year Gala 2016 Chinese New Year Gala 2016 The Chinese Scholars & Students Association is hosting a special cultural evening to celebrate Chinese New Year on Wednesday February 3rd at Newcastle City Hall.
Sunderland Chinese New Year 2016 Sunderland Chinese New Year 2016 Celebrate the year of the monkey on Sunday February 6th with Chinese arts and crafts, lion dances and family trails at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens between 11am - 3pm. This is a free activity and there is no need to book.
Chinese Brush Painting & Calligraphy Chinese Brush Painting & Calligraphy Saturday February 6 - As a part of the exhibition Jayamini is offering a free calligraphy workshop for children and families on Saturday February 6, between 10am-11.30am in Room 4. No booking is required as this is a drop in session.
Seven Stories Fun Family Chinese New Year Activities Seven Stories Fun Family Chinese New Year Activities Seven Stories is hosting a fun-filled day of Chinese themed activities to celebrate the Year of the Monkey on February 7. The workshops and activities are free, but to attend the events you must purchase a day ticket for Seven Stories. Admission is £7.70 for adults; £6.60 for children (aged 4-16); £2.50 for toddlers (1-3 years old); and babies aged up to 12 months go free.
Eldon Square - Kung Fu Panda 3 Eldon Square – Kung Fu Panda 3 When: 16 Feb - 18 Feb (11:00am - 4:00pm) From 16 February, Eldon Square (near Debenhams) celebrate the cinema release of Kung Fu Panda 3 as well as Chinese New Year to bring you 3 days of free craft activities this February half term.
Chinese New Year - Film screenings Chinese New Year – Film screenings The cinema has teamed up with The Confucius Institute of Newcastle University and Heaven Pictures to screen a short season of Chinese films as part of a series of events in Newcastle to coincide with Chinese New Year. Screening times: February 11 at 5:55pm; Monday, February 15 at 6pm & Saturday February 20 at 1pm.

Chinese New Year Greetings

People will say “Happy New Year” to you mainly in Cantonese and Mandarin. It’s polite and fun to respond in the same language. To say “Happy New Year” in Cantonese is “San Nin Faai Lok” (pronounced san knee fy lock) and in Mandarin is “Xin Nian Kuai Le”.
